Sobriety & Recovery blogs

In my previous post where I listed my favourite sobriety podcasts I talked about how much sobriety and recovery podcasts, blogs and books have helped me since I quit drinking in May of 2015. Listening and reading I felt a connection to women who were telling stories similar to mine or who talked and wrote about things that I could relate to. I did a longer introduction in that post so if you want to check it out you can find it here.

In this post I’m going to list some of my favourite sobriety blogs so far. Some of these ladies also feature in the podcast post as they do both. For each I’ve included a link that will take you to one of my favourite blog posts on their website.

Unpickled

Jean McCarthy (podcast host of The Bubble Hour) writes about her experience of living life sober through her blog Unpickled. In her own words:

“I am learning to walk without the crutch of alcohol.  I began writing this blog on my first day of sobriety.  Gulp. I drank quietly in private and have managed to quit just as privately. I didn’t stay quiet about it, though. My story is all here. The purpose of this blog is to help make me accountable and, as it turns out, to encourage others along the way.”

And encourage others she most definitely has. Jean writes very honestly about the reality of living life without her old crutch. Even though there’s a difference in age I could relate so much to Jean who often describes how her drinking self was a perfectionist and a high achiever. Since quitting drinking she has been on a journey inwards to learn more about herself and she shares what she learns with her loyal following.

I’ve always felt like Jean was my first connection to sobriety so it was very exciting when I finally got to meet her at the She Recovers conference in New York city in May of 2017. She is such an elegant, gracious woman (what we, in Ireland, would refer to as 'a real lady') and when I think of the type of person I’d like to be as my children grow up I always think of Jean.

Laura McKowen

Another podcaster (Home, along with Holly Whittaker) Laura McKowen’s writing has brought me to tears more than once. She is SO unbelievably honest and brave and in the realm of sobriety writing that makes for some pretty deep blog posts. In her introduction Laura describes herself as:

“a mama, writer, light-seeker and recovery warrior. I believe we desperately need each other’s most honest stories—to know that we are not alone, to learn how to move through life, to remember who we are. I write here about my struggle with addiction, my journey to sobriety, motherhood, and love of all kinds.”

Hip Sobriety

Holly Whittaker is the woman behind Hip Sobriety. As well as writing her blog and co-hosting Home, Holly runs Hip Sobriety School which is “an 8-week virtual course..for people who are looking to get started on a path to sobriety, or who are already in some sort of recovery program.” Her course includes so much brilliant material that I couldn’t even begin to go into detail here. Holly is a pioneer in the area of alternative recovery options. Her writing is controversial for some but revolutionary for me.

She Recovers

I can’t remember how I came across She Recovers but I’m so glad that I did. Mother and daughter duo Dawn Nickel and Taryn Strong are behind the website which provides a platform for women to share their story of recovery. Dawn has a long recovery history and is known as the Mamma Bear in recovery circles as she has connected so many women over the years. The ethos of She Recovers is strongly reflected in the wording used on their homepage:

“Women who are recovering in all areas of their lives and who follow all pathways of recovery are warmly welcomed here on She Recovers.”

In addition to the website they run recovery retreats in a number of beautiful locations around the world. I haven’t been lucky enough to do one of those yet but I did make it to the She Recovers Conference in New York earlier this year that saw over 500 women in recovery get together for an amazing weekend of inspirational speakers like Glennon Doyle Melton and Marianne Williamson.

Veronica Valli

Veronica’s blog is one I’ve only started following recently as I only became aware of her at the She Recovers conference. She has been a therapist and addiction counsellor for 15 years and has been sober herself for 17 years. She has a very introspective and spiritual approach to recovery which I like and she's all about finding the source of what caused the pain that resulted in you becoming dependent on alcohol for relief.

There are many more women joining the world of sobriety and recovery blogging so I hope to be able to share more blogs in time to come.

Hope you find these blogs helpful.
